PRESS OPERATOR

PRINT SOLUTIONS

Hours: Full-Time | Third Shift 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM

Scope: This position exists to perform the essential functions.  Set up, adjust, operate, and maintain press.  Review job specifications to determine the press setup according to the imposition of the run.  Perform all make-ready tasks associated with the type of press operated, examine plates/cylinders for imperfections and check for correct positioning of images, prepping, adjusting tension and register, etc.  Make necessary color corrections and press adjustments before the production run to meet and maintain the quality specifications of the work. Clean, lubricate, and maintain the press, making minor repairs and replacing worn or broken parts as required. Performs periodic maintenance recommended by the manufacturer.

Essential Functions

  1. Read, analyze, and interpret run tickets and understand job specifications.
  2. Install plates and blankets on press cylinders and use hand and power tools to achieve the pressure required for printing.
  3. Adjusts press machine parts, such as feeder and delivery mechanisms, suction grippers, guides, feed wheels, jogging devices, tapes, and cams, using hand tools.
  4. Remove and replace worn rollers and adjust pressure between rollers of press, using hand tools.
  5. Wash blankets and clean ink and ink distributing rollers and ink fountains, using ink solvent and cleaning mechanism on press.
  6. Assist press operator in quality control of sheets produced.
  7. Identify and troubleshoot equipment, as needed.
  8. Monitor quality, output, and productivity. Assure the quality of the finished product.
  9. Inspect equipment for safety issues.
  10. Perform routine maintenance according to PM schedule.
  11. Positively communicate information and respond to questions from team members.
  12. Complete appropriate forms relating to job tickets: stock description, quantity, unit of issue, and the labeling requirements for incoming and outgoing materials.
  13. Keep the area clean, organized, and safe.
  14. Support all 5-S and lean initiatives, as required.
  15. Participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  16. Participate in and satisfactorily complete all required training programs for the assigned position.
  17. Adhere to and promote all safety policies and procedures including, but not limited to, the proper handling of hazardous waste, lockout/tagout rules, and hearing and eye protection policies.
  18. Perform other duties as assigned by management representatives within the scope of responsibility and the requirements of the job.

Education:

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalency, is required.
  • Associates degree in print operations and communications, or related field, preferred.

Skills & Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years experience as a Press Operator in a commercial print environment is required.
  • Requires thorough knowledge of offset printing procedures, materials and specifications, equipment, and safety requirements, and skills to perform assignments.
  • Prior operating experience with Komori K440 or K840, preferred.
  • Knowledge of sheetfed printing.
  • Skill to read and understand job specifications and knowledge of press capabilities to determine the most appropriate press usage, press settings, and materials needed to run the job successfully.
  • Ability to read and understand stock tickets, making sure the stock type and quantities are correct for each job.
  • Skill to make a variety of difficult precise settings of controls, settings, and adjustments, and to perform routine operational maintenance of equipment.
  • Skill in routine operational maintenance and minor repairs to equipment.
  • Knowledge of the appropriate amount of packing pressure needed to obtain the proper printing pressure for the type of job being run.
  • Skill in the use of a micrometer to mount and align the printing plate correctly.
  • Ability to maintain a fast pace and work with a sense of urgency.

  • Able to stock, move, jog, arrange, unload, count, and rotate items on/off equipment in accordance with operating instructions or under the guidance of an operator or supervisor.
  • Able to stand for the duration of the shift, as assigned.
  • Able to walk about for extended periods.
  • Able to interpret information effectively, listen, speak clearly, and communicate effectively.
  • Able to ascend and descend stairs and/or ladder, bend, stoop, twist, reach, push, pull, lift, lower, and grasp, regularly.
  • Able to frequently lift 20 pounds and occasionally lift 50 pounds.
  • Able to maintain good attendance.
  • Able to be flexible with schedule to include working overtime in support of the workload, or working a different shift, as needed.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
