ASSISTANT MANAGER, PRINT & FINISHING

The position is responsible for assisting the manager in the day-to-day direction of the print, bindery and finishing centers of the company, for both the second and third shifts. The position interacts regularly with the manger and individuals across the organization to ensure that the company’s print, bindery and finishing operations remain profitable and efficient. The position assists in providing ongoing direction to department leads in the print, bindery and finishing operations. The position works to assist the manager to ensure that all related operational systems, equipment and processes are continuously evaluated for proper operation, relevance, utilization and efficiency. The position assists the manager in implementing improved processes and management methods to reduce rework, generate higher ROI, optimize workflow and encourage innovation. The position will report directly to the Manager, Print and Finishing. Periodic travel to company locations may be necessary, as well as to customer and vendor locations and for professional related events. Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
High school diploma or GED is required. Bachelor’s degree in business/industrial management, industrial engineering or related field preferred.
Minimum 8–10 years of related experience in management of a high-volume commercial print, manufacturing environment, with multiple concurrent projects complementary to the duties of the job OR demonstrated ability to meet the job requirements through comparable years of work experience and education. Exceptional knowledge of all aspects of the functions and duties of the print production areas (offset, digital and wide-format press operations; bindery and finishing). Understanding of printing process, including prepress procedures, platemaking, paper grades, printing registration, color and chemistry as well as collating and finishing processes. Knowledge of materials, equipment, safety requirements and skills to perform assignments. Ability to read and interpret a variety of instructions in written, verbal, diagram, mathematical and/or schedule form; deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Knowledge of equipment capabilities to determine the most appropriate use and corrective adjustments required to run efficiently. Ability to define routine and complex problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to effectively set work directions and adjust priorities according to changing business needs. Ability to prepare, understand and manage print production records, employee timekeeping records, employee performance documents, equipment maintenance records and other documentation. Ability to comprehend and implement company and local policies and procedures regarding quality, production standards, etc. Ability to demonstrate role model behaviors, including proper methods of operating and working safely around press and auxiliary equipment. Skills in verbal and written communications to effectively lead, coach, mentor and motivate employees to achieve results. Ability to effectively interact with direct reports, management, support departments and other internal customers as well as external customers. Competence in Microsoft Word/Excel, Pace (company-specific production system) and other applications as required.
This position requires the individual to work in both a sedentary and physically active capacity. This position will be required to stand or walk for extended periods of time. This is approximately a 90 percent physical role with the balance of time required to interact or help in a sedentary capacity. The individual in this position needs to move around inside both the office and manufacturing areas to access files, communicate with the team and individuals, operate machinery, etc., regularly. Regularly operates a computer and other office machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine and computer printer as needed. The person in this position frequently communicates with coworkers, customers and business partners to complete work assignments. The position will require the ability to communicate, speak, hear, see, sit, bend, stand, stoop, walk, push, pull, lift, lower and grasp as necessary. Carry weight, lift (to a height of 3–4 feet), transfer, position and move materials up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 50 pounds regularly. The ability to control operations of equipment or systems. Running, maneuvering, navigating or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment, such as forklifts, etc., as needed. Due to the nature of the job, specific vision abilities are required, including close vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus with or without reasonable accommodation.
